![]() Gil Bellows also plays Evans, a menacing fixer for Jett’s enemy Miljan Bestic (Greg Bryk), while Chris Backus does nicely as a henchman named Bennie. Though they felt like their own capsule story for a moment, Michael Aronov’s Jackie + Jodie Turner-Smith’s (one of the best parts of Syfy’s short-lived Nightflyers) Josie have a satisfying chemistry. With assistance from her Spanish friend Maria (a wonderful Elena Anaya) + a Swedish escort named Phoenix (a cute Gaite Jansen), Jett tries to balance her work with her adorable daughter Alice (Violet McGraw). Giancarlo Esposito, ever a stalwart, is a charismatic, smooth-talking foil for Jett as her crime lord ex Charlie. Gugino is a stellar lead as ex-thief Daisy (aka Jett), whose imbues this fitting starring role with an array of slick Jane Bond skills. Though this is a minor detail, for a series on a network once nicknamed Skinemax, there are quite a few pieces of male nudity as well. The ensemble also includes a bunch of amusing supporting characters, many of color. With its nice destinations, sassy dialogue, and not-too-serious vibe, the series delivers thrills, some of them cheap, but more often than not, fun. The brainchild of Venezuelan director/writer Sebastian Gutierrez, this new heist drama is a stylish, pulpy exercise in appreciating the many talents of Carla Gugino (recently lighting up Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House). JETT is an encouraging sign of things to come as Cinemax increases output. With only a select few fantastic deceased ( Banshee, The Knick) + current series ( Warrior), the network has been running lean, selecting lower-budget British co-productions + action-packed series ( Banshee does share a similar concept, as does TNT’s cancelled Good Behavior). Cinemax, HBO’s corporate sibling, is having an intriguing moment in #PlatinumTV as its parent company WarnerMedia hands down programming increase mandates.
